Dan was born on July 5, 1934, in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, to Jeanne and Alvin Schipper. After spending his childhood in Wisconsin, his family moved to Boulder, Colorado, where he later graduated from the University of Colorado.
Known for his warmth and social nature, Dan made friends easily wherever he went. Though drafted during the Korean War, he was stationed in Europe—an experience that sparked a lifelong love for Germany. His career was diverse: he taught for Department of Defense schools in Germany and worked for the War on Poverty and the Bureau of Indian Affairs before spending 20 years with the Treasury Department focusing on Savings Bonds.
Dan’s greatest passion was travel. He visited over 75 countries and frequently returned to Germany to visit dear friends. In retirement, he spent months at a time traveling the world on United Airlines standby passes, flying wherever an empty seat was available. Remarkably, he continued these solo adventures until the age of 91, always keeping a trip on his calendar.
Dan is survived by his brother Mark, his sister Chris, his former wife Sue, his son Karl, his daughter Sarah, and his grandchildren Cameo, Willis, Hazel, Max, and Eric. He was predeceased by his parents, Jeanne and Alvin, his brother David, and his daughter Karin.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you plan a trip of your own and raise a "prost" in Dan's memory. A celebration of life will be scheduled at Haus Waldsee in Montana at a later date.
