Donald Arneson Obituary

Donald E. Arneson passed away peacefully at his home on the morning of Saturday, April 4, 2026.

Don lived a life grounded in the things he loved most; the outdoors, the quiet beauty of Montana and the vast array of music he listened to and played on his guitar, or the pictures he enjoyed snapping of his friends.

He earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Montana, a place that remained meaningful to him throughout his life.

He especially cherished time spent at his property on Bug Creek Road near Swan Lake, Montana. It was there that Don felt most at home, surrounded by the land he loved. Whether he was hunting moose, elk, and sheep, casting a line while fishing, or simply hiking through the mountains, Don found joy and peace in the outdoors.

Don will also be remembered for his quick wit and sharp, funny comebacks. He had a way of delivering humor at just the right moment, often catching people off guard and leaving them laughing.

Those who knew Don will remember his steady presence, his appreciation for nature, and the simple, meaningful way he lived his life.

Don also had a thoughtful and reflective side, which he expressed through his writing. The following poem, written by Don, reflects his perspective and spirit:

Dance Of Enchantment

August 15, 2001

On a pond below the lake

I flipped an offering for the take.

On the drift he came up big

And gulped fly down in one mere swig.

After photo I set him free

Winds and wind around the scree.

Now, I’m home and so is he.

Don’t you wish you were as free?

Don will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His memory lives on in the mountains he walked, the waters he fished, and the lives he touched.

Don was preceded in death by his parents George and Evelyn, his sister Diane, brother Ronald, and the girl who truly stole his whole heart-his sweet dachshund Dixie.
